Gilman romps in opener; Hurricane Irene cancels Calvert Hall-John Carroll matchup

If the rest of Shane Cockerille's prep career at Gilman goes as well as his debut, the junior from Stoneleigh is in for a joyride with the Greyhounds.

All the DeMatha transfer did was race 80 yards for a score on the home team's first play from scrimmage on Friday afternoon in Roland Park, setting the tone for a 68-9 thrashing of the Maryland Christian Saints, a Hartford County-based Fellowship of Christian Athletes team manned by homeschooled or private school players who don't have a high school football program available.

Regardless of who they brought, the defending Mid-Atlantic Christian Conference champs were simply no match for the Greyhounds.

"The line blocked everybody they needed to," said Cockerille, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound southpaw. "The hole was wide open, and I could just go from there."

So did the Greyhounds, who built a 35-0 first-quarter advantage and were ahead, 55-3, by the intermission in the blowout.

Cockerille said he was helped by having his former DeMatha head coach (Bill McGregor) and offensive coordinator (Chris Baucia) on the Gilman staff.

When asked about the differences in styles between the programs, Cockerille said he "likes this a little better" because it focuses more on the quarterback.

He also added that the Greyhounds "will be ready" when they host Oscar Smith High (Va.) on Sept. 2 at Morgan State at 8 p.m. in the I-95 Kickoff Classic.

Meanwhile, defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Calvert Hall will have to wait until Sept. 1 to open its season when it travels to Bowie State University to meet St. John's (D.C.) at 8 p.m.

The Cardinals' scheduled opener at John Carroll was canceled because, "Harford County is shutting down all events for Saturday and Sunday due to the hurricane conditions and forecast. No makeup date has been scheduled," according to an e-mail from Calvert Hall principal Lou Heidrick.
