Loch Raven overcomes early foul trouble, tops Overlea in girls basketball

Loch Raven coach Allyson Sieka had a scare in the first quarter against Overlea Wednesday night when two of her best players ran into early foul trouble.

Freshman center Tyana Custis and junior point guard Melissa Magtanong both picked up two fouls.

So Sieka benched them for the rest of the first half.

They each played about four minutes in the half as the Raiders fell behind by three points to Overlea (3-6).

But things went more smoothly for Loch Raven in the second half as Custis and Magtanong stayed out of foul trouble and the visiting Raiders cruised to a 44-31 victory.

Magtanong led her team with 12 points and had seven steals. Custis added eight points and eight rebounds.

"We came out much more aggressively in the second half," said Sieka, whose team has won four straight after a 1-6 start. "I just think having them back on the floor gave us more confidence. I think in the first half we held our own, but I think we could have been much more ahead if my scorers were on the floor."

Loch Raven led 10-7 with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter before Overlea's Kiara Mcrae and Kaylee Hahn hit back-to-back three pointers.

The Raiders closed the first half with a 10-4 run to go ahead 22-18.

Overlea kept the deficit to four points early in the third quarter before Loch Raven finished the period with a 7-1 spurt to boost its lead to 10 points.

The Raiders led by as many as 16 points in the final quarter.

The Falcons committed 11 turnovers in the second half and shot 21 percent from the field.

"It was hard for us trying to come back because were trying to do too much and turning the ball over," Overlea coach Steven Brooks said. "We are not taking care of the ball the way we should and we are taking a lot of bad shots."

Kim Ndukwe was the only Overlea player in double figures, with 16 points.

Jessica Carpenter had eight points for Loch Raven, Destiny Cromer six, Samantha Knapp four and Kaitlin Krejcik four. Samantha Yanaga finished with seven rebounds.
