DVD, workshop offer tips from Lutherville painter

Lutherville resident David Kressin, a professional house painter for nearly 20 years, recently released a new DVD "Take a Professional Painter Home with You," designed to teach the average person how to paint an interior room in several concise steps.

"The paint industry assumes everyone knows the basic painting fundamentals or recommends taping everything in the room," Kressin said. "If I painted the way most online videos teach, I would be out of business."

He said the video, "illustrates the fundamentals and tricks of the trade, which aren't hard."

The DVD is available at Greetings & Readings, Amazon.comand http://www.theperfectcutpainting.com. The website also includes a gallery of photos, a Q&A section and a "Tip of the Week."

Kressin will have an appearance at Greetings & Readings of Hunt Valley, 18-AA Shawan Road, on Saturday, May 19, from 8:45 to 10 a.m. for a free painting workshop.

The workshop will cover project planning and materials needed; basic preparation techniques including spackle, caulk, priming; painting techniques and brush work. The workshop will be hands-on, with opportunity for guests to participate and try the skills themselves. Appropriate attire is recommended.

Refreshments will be served at 8:45 a.m. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. Space is limited. To register, call 410-771-3022.

Kressin began house painting as a part-time job while studying for a degree in law enforcement and corrections at Towson University more than 20 years ago.

He said he was hooked on painting and found satisfaction working with his hands. Even after securing his degree and working at Prisoner's Aid Association of Maryland Inc., he continued with painting projects, and ultimately became a full-time painter.

During his career, he has worked on projects ranging from simple projects to complex historical renovations — including some in Baltimore's Mount Vernon area.
