On Saturday, Oct. 12, the 2013-2014 Cecil County Fire Prevention Ambassador Contest was held at Station 6, Perryville. The contest winners are: Miss Cecil County, Sarah Bowles of Singerly Fire Company; Miss Cecil County first runner-up, Michaella Patrick of Perryville Fire Company; Junior Miss Cecil County, Madeline Moore of Rising Sun Fire Company; Junior Miss Cecil County first runner-up, Mary Dixon of Cecilton Fire Company; Little Miss Cecil County, Victoria Reil of North East Fire Company; Junior Fire Chief, A. J. Davis of Singerly Fire Company; and Little Fire Chief, George Logan IV of Perryville Fire Company.
Congratulations and best wishes to Bob and Dawn Lipka Gambill of Elkton as they celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary Oct. 14. Bob and Dawn enjoyed bingo that morning with the Senior Bingo players at the McDonald's in Rising Sun.
Members of the Perryville High School Class of 1978 gathered in Minker Hall, Community Fire Company of Perryville, on Oct. 19 for their 35th reunion. According to former Port Deposit native, Peggy Gabbert McComas, the attendees included friends from the Class of 1957 and the Class of 1960. They also had the pleasure of partying with PHS alumni from 1974 to 1984. DJ "Batman" did a wonderful job playing music from all decades starting with the 1950s. Peggy reports, "The reunion was a blast!"

Our granddaughter, Princess Ella, celebrated her 8th birthday with her family and friends at her castle outside Port Deposit Oct. 20. Cousins Natalie, Isabella, Cash, Gavin and baby Luke, along with friends Lily, Alyssa, Corbin, Bella, Anthony, Logan, Landon and Dylan, enjoyed plenty of pizza followed by a piñata on a sunny but cool Sunday afternoon.
Shasta Burkins England, daughter of Trish Reynolds, enjoyed birthday greetings on Oct. 21 and Dottie Bickel of Rising Sun celebrated on Oct. 22. My old dear friend, Sarah Warrington Colenda, Principio Furnace, subtracted a year from her age on Oct. 24.
Folks, you are in for a treat! The Carriage House has been open each weekend in October, featuring antiques, uniques and stuff, and this weekend is the last sale date. The Carriage House is at 80 S. Main St. and it will be open today (Friday) from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. This large granite building on South Main Street served as Jacob Tome's carriage house; Tome's mansion was originally next door. The mansion was razed in 1947 and the Port Deposit Lions Club members built the Port Pool on that property. Collectors, check it out!
The VFW Post 8185 will sponsor the Fall Car Show on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the post home at 520 Susquehanna River Road, Port Deposit. Registration on the day of the show will be $15, which includes one free hot dog and one free beverage. Dash plaques will be given to the first 70 registered vehicles. The Paw Paw Museum, 98 N. Main St., will be open on Sunday for the last time this season. The museum will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. that day. Stop by and take a gander at the many artifacts on display.
