Boy Scouts help clean up Port Deposit VFW post

Members of Boy Scout Troop 143 worked hard Saturday morning at the VFW Post 8185 and their efforts were certainly noticed by VFW members and personnel. The scouts cleared overhanging tree limbs and excessive brush, weeds and debris along the railroad tracks. The Scouts landscaping efforts helped to get the VFW's newly-striped parking lot ready for the Fall Car Show this weekend.

The VFW Post 8185 will sponsor Fall Car Show on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Dash plaques will be given to the first 70 vehicles registered. Look for lots of door prizes, food, music and a 50/50 raffle. The post is at 520 Susquehanna River Road. The rain date will be Saturday, Oct. 27. Call 410-642-2847 for information. Proceeds benefit our veterans.

Food was distributed again at the Bethel AME Church, 196 N. Main St., Oct. 6. Mark your calendars for the second Thursday of each month from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Much sympathy is extended to Joe Simmers and his family, following the passing of his mom last week.

Happy birthday to Anne Gibson, Barton Road, as she celebrated her Oct. 6 birthday with a visit to her granddaughter in Georgia. Anne and her daughter, Stephanie, flew to Atlanta and then drove to Fort Benning to visit Christine Gibson Farley and her soldier hubby, Steven Farley.

Lu and Chuck Helm traveled to Kansas City Saturday to wish happy birthday to their son, Scott, who celebrated his big day with them on Oct. 7.

Bob Pontown, Conowingo, enjoyed birthday greetings on Oct. 8.

Boy Scout Troop 143 will sponsor an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner Saturday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church, corner of Tome Highway and Fire Tower Road, Colora. Adults will cost $8 while children under 10 will be $4. Carryouts will be available.

The Darlington Volunteer Fire Company, 2600 Castleton Road, will hold open house on Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. until noon following breakfast which will be served from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Cost for breakfast is $9 per person. The open house will feature fun and education for the whole family. Call 410-638-3760 for more information.

The Perry Point VA Medical Center's Veterans Museum Committee will host a Fall Open House of the Historic Mansion, 501 Fifth St., Perry Point Village Housing Area on Friday, Oct. 19 from 1 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 3 to 7:30 p.m.

Coming up in November: VFW Post 8185 is planning a flag retirement ceremony for Sunday, Nov. 11 at dusk at the post home at 520 Susquehanna River Road. Have an old flag that needs to be disposed of properly? Then come to Port's VFW on Veterans Day and bring that worn out flag. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Coming up in December: Two "historic preservation" events – first, the Port Deposit Heritage's Candlelight Tour is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1 throughout Main Street and the second event is Principio Iron Works Mansion House Tour, Principio Furnace Road, held in conjunction with a Soup and Pie Sale at Principio Methodist Church.
