Track and field star and recent Perryville High School graduate, Cody Richardson, died following an accident between North East and Rising Sun shortly before noon Wednesday.
Two other men were also injured in the crash, according to the Cecil County Sheriff's Office.
Steven Gary Thornton of Port Deposit was driving a 1993 Ford Explorer south on Red Toad Road around 11:59 a.m. Wednesday.
Thornton lost control of the SUV between Gravel Pit Road and Ebenezer Church Road and the SUV rolled several times, according to the sheriff's office.
Mr. Richardson, 18, of the 700 block of Concord Point Drive in Perryville, was a passenger in the front seat of the SUV at the time of the crash. He was taken to Union Hospital in Elkton where he died later in the day.
Thornton, 18, of the first block of Water Wheel Drive, was a fellow graduate and teammate of Mr. Richardson's.
Thornton and his other passenger, Brady Alan McDaniel, 18, of the 100 block of Frist Road in Colora, were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according sheriff's office.
Police said they believe none of the young men were wearing seatbelts. The accident remains under investigation.
Thornton and Mr. Richardson were both on the Perryville High track and field team.
Mr. Richardson won a state title in hurdles at the Maryland State Track and Field championships in late May. He placed fourth in the 110 hurdles, won the Class 1A state title in the 300 hurdles and placed 11th in the long jump.
Thornton had a strong showing at the same meet, and he and Mr. Richardson were both on the school's 4x400 relay team that placed sixth.
