Graduation parties, concerts, triathlon in Perryville

Congratulations to my niece and god-daughter, Kelsey Glatts, on her graduation from Sun Valley High School. Kelsey was also senior class secretary. She was a member of the honor society and the National Spanish Honor Society. She received the following honors: Pennsylvania State Representative Stephen Barrar Service Award; Brookhaven American Legion Albert Merlino Memorial Post 94 Citizenship Award, Coebourn Elementary PTL award – Jerry Achuff Award; Van "Guard" Color Guard and Class of 2013 Class Officers. Kelsey will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall.

Linda Southall-Barton hosted a family graduation party for her daughter, Natalie Barton, who graduated from MICA in May. Those attending the party were Natalie's grandmother, Mary Lou Southall, her great-aunt, Edith Foland and Roger and I. Linda and Natalie prepared homemade cream of crab soup; it was so thick you could eat it with a fork.

Havre de Grace Arts Commission's 2013 summer concerts are held at Millard E. Tydings Park on Friday nights through the end of July, starting at 7:30 p.m. Note, there is no rain location. Bring your chairs and picnics. On tap for tonight (Friday) is the Larry Brown Quintet, a five-piece jazz group,

Mark your calendar for an evening concert with Charlie Zahm with fiddler Tad Marks and guitarist Steve Hobson at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Friday, July 12. Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Adults $10. Children under 16 are free.

July 13 is the Diamond in the Rough Triathlon at Perryville Community Park. The race is sanctioned by the USAT. There is an entry fee for participants. Free for spectators. Event starts at 8 a.m. Check or contact Neil Semmel,, for more information.

Upcoming bingos include Saturday, July 13, a variety quarter auction. Doors open at 6 p.m., the auction begins at 7 p.m. Sponsored by Ray of Hope. Friday, July 26 is a basket and thirty-one bags bingo for $12 a ticket and $5 for extra. The Past and Present Matrons and Patrons Association of Northern Maryland held their quarterly meeting at Chiapparelli's restaurant in Havre de Grace. The members of the association are Past and/or Present Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons from the three local Harford County Eastern Star chapters. Havre de Grace Chapter 27, Victory Chapter 40 from Aberdeen and Harford 83 from Bel Air. The meeting was hosted by the members of Victory Chapter 40. Association President Sister Susie Passwaters, from Havre de Grace Chapter 27, presided and welcomed the following members of the Grand Chapter of Maryland including Brother Edsal Crouse, Associate Grand Patron and Diane Smith Associate Grand Conductress; Past Grand Matron Marianne Pryer, Past Grand Patrons – Wilbur Carr, Ron Mathias and Tom Pryer; Worthy Matrons Carolyn Mathias and Brenda Compher, Worthy Patrons Ron Mathias, Wilbur Carr and Edsal Crouse; Deputy Grand Lecturer Betty Bollock; Grand Representatives Becky Gjerdahl, Jean Penley and Betty Bollock; members Louise Fagan, Joyce Caldwell, Evelyn Owens, Ed and Sandy Matthews, Rosalie Monath, Debbie Zacharek, Sandra Lee Massey, Kathy Voris, Bonnie Plickta and I; and new honorary members Aileen Squires and Ellen Crouse and well as visitors, Carolyn and Chuck Brennen, Jean Gamble, Tim Zacharek and Melissa Bollock.

Joyful Noiz, the contemporary worship band at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will perform on July 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Aberdeen Festival Park for the free summer concert series. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Don't forget to bring a lawn chair. In the event of inclement weather, performance will be held at the Aberdeen Middle School.

Happy belated birthday to Cpl. Ralph Sumpter of Port Deposit. Ralph celebrated his 94th birthday on June 19 and is a World War II veteran who served in Patton's 4th Armored Division in Europe and he was "there" (as he puts it) 16 days after D-Day. He was also in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. We love you, Uncle Ralph, from his niece, Colleen.
