Panthers fall short of UCBAC girls volleyball crown

Perryville's bid for an UCBAC girls volleyball championship came up a little short Wednesday at North East High School, where Chesapeake (upper) Division champion Rising Sun defeated Susquehanna (lower) champ Perryville, 3-1.

The Tigers won the first two games, 25-5 and 25-20, respectively, before the Panthers avoided the sweep by taking game three, 25-18. Rising Sun then closed out the match with a 25-16 win in game four.

Stat leaders for Perryville were Morgan Tennant, 17 assists and three digs; Emily Merklinger, 12 kills and four blocks; and Kylie Shiflett, 12 service points and six digs.

The Panthers are 13-3.


All three local teams will begin regional playoffs. Aberdeen is the only team in action this week, scheduled to host Patapsco Thursday in 3A North, Section II play.

Havre de Grace and Perryville will begin play Monday 1A East, Section I action. Havre de Grace will visit Bo Manor and Perryville will host Joppatowne.

Panthers beat Huskies

Perryvillle closed out its regular season Oct. 24 with a 3-0 win over visiting Patterson Mill in Susquehanna play. The scores were 25-20, 25-22 and 25-20.

Leading the Panthers were Tennant, 12 assists, 11 service points, eight kills and five aces; Merklinger, nine kills and seven service points; Rachel Bell, 11 service points, five aces and four digs; and Shiflett, seven digs and six service points.

Havre de Grace (4-10 league, 4-11 overall) won 3-0 at Joppatowne (0-14 league, 0-15 overall) Oct. 24 in Susquehanna action. The scores were 25-9, 25-12 and 25-4.
