Cal Ripken World Series starts Friday [Aberdeen]

The time has come! The Cal Ripken World Series begins tonight at Cal Sr.'s Yard, where there will be a game against the Mid-Atlantic Championship Squad.

Imagine! This will be the 14th summer that this will happen in Aberdeen with all the connected events for the community.

The big event concludes the Babe Ruth 12U Major 70 season. Sixteen teams from across the world, and at home, will be featured. Harford County will be represented by the Hickory Hornets, who will bat off the competition Friday at 8 p.m.

To start off the Harford County against the Mid-Atlantic game, the teams will parade onto Cal Sr.'s Yard and be introduced as part of the opening ceremony.

After the opening ceremony, a skills competition, including a home-run derby, will start at 5:30 p.m.

This is really the big night! After the opening game, there will be a big fireworks show which will start at 10 p.m.

On Saturday, the teams will parade through the City of Aberdeen, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Law Street and West Bel Air Avenue. It will progress on West Bel Air Avenue and turn left at Howard Street and end at Festival Park. The mile-long parade will take about one hour. The City of Aberdeen has been getting ready for this big day for weeks!

After the parade the tournament will last with playoff games until Sunday, Aug. 18. A carnival will take place throughout the Ripken Complex from 5 p.m. through the end of the last scheduled game.

After the tournament, there will be a concert by singer Karla Davis on Ripken Way, between the Marriott Hotel and Cal Sr.'s Yard. This championship day will get coverage by NBC.

The long-awaited event will conclude on Aug. 18 with a wrap-up party at Cal Sr.'s Yard.

The American Red Cross and the Cal Ripken Youth Baseball division are hosting an inaugural Red Cross Day blood drive during the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen on Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Each donor will receive a coupon for a free Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee and doughnut, a voucher for one ticket to an upcoming Orioles home game, one reserved seat at the Cal Ripken World Series and will have a chance to be included in a group on the field at Cal Sr.'s Yard.
