Saturday, Sept. 21 marks the International Day of Peace, established by a United Nations resolution in 1982.

Also Saturday, happy autumn! Officially, Sept. 21/22 is the first day of autumn. It's time to enjoy colorful leaves, pumpkins, fall harvests and turkeys, among other things.

Acquire your fall harvest at Havre de Grace Farmers market, 450 Pennington Ave., Saturdays through October, 9 a.m. to noon. September is National Honey Month. Celebrate with your honey and buy fresh honey at the farmers market. Be a honey and buzz on over there.

Pet your pachyderm. Sept. 22 is Elephant Appreciation Day. Have a handful of peanuts!

Buenos Dias! National Hispanic Heritage Month continues through Oct. 15. This observance honors the histories, cultures and contributions of citizens who share the common language and ancestry of Spanish. For more information, go to

Congratulations to local radio station WXCY, which through its radiothon Sept. 10 and 11, raised more than $200,000 in donations for the A.I. Nemours Children's Hospital. What a great accomplishment; I was listening in.

Deepest regrets to the families and friends of two well-known ladies about Havre de Grace, Jean Mears, who passed Sept. 7, and Elsie A. Collison, who passed Aug. 29. I had worked with Jean since 2004 as a volunteer at the visitor center and knew Elsie from our membership in the Havre de Grace AARP chapter. Both ladies will sorely be missed.

PNC Bank will be closing the drive-through facility in the 300 block of N. Union Ave. I phoned PNC representative Brian Clattee about this change, 410-638-2004 and expressed my disappointment, in what I view is a decrease in public services.
