Students honored during Youth Appreciation Week

Two local Optimists clubs recently honored a dozen high school students during Youth Appreciation Week. Both the Greater Jacksonville Optimists and the Hereford Optimist solicited nominations of area students who make a difference at their schools and in their communities.

The Hereford Optimists honored the following seven students on Nov. 15:

Zachary Dell, of Hampstead, is a senior at North Carroll High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society, runs track for Hereford, and is in the orchestra.

Jennifer Harmon, of Reisterstown, is a senior at North Carroll High School. She is class vice president, captain of the field hockey team, a member of the yearbook staff and has participated in many of the school's plays.

Sabrina Hudicka, of Hampstead, is a senior at North Carroll High School. A member of the National Honor Society, she also performs in the school's plays and is a Sunday school substitute teacher and Bible school volunteer.

Charles Paton, of Parkton, is a junior at Hereford High School. He plays soccer, basketball, baseball and lacrosse for Hereford. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and is an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 92.

Taylor Russell, of Upperco, is a junior at Hereford High School. He is active in the Hereford Volunteer Fire Company, Future Farmers of America and is on the school's student council.

Claire Shaffer, of Hydes, is a sophomore at Friends School of Baltimore. She plays field hockey, basketball and lacrosse and is Student Council secretary. She has also performed in numerous theater productions.

Tyler Wolfe, of Parkton, is a junior at Hereford High School. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 451 and is active at Hereford United Methodist Church where he has gone on three mission trips. At school, he is in the Pep Band and is in charge of sound production for Hereford's plays and musicals.

The Jacksonville Optimists honored the following five students on Nov. 17:

Elizabeth Chang, of Monkton, is a junior at the Science and Mathematics Academy of Aberdeen High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. She also is on the varsity field hockey team and is involved at St. John's Lutheran Church of Sweet Air, in Phoenix.

John Connell Jr., of Glen Arm, is a senior at Salem Christian School home school program and is taking college courses at Community College of Baltimore County. He has participated in several local and international mission trips with Long Green Baptist Church where he is a youth group leader. He also works as assistant production manager at the Prigel Family Creamery, in Long Green.

Stefanie Diehl, of Jarrettsville, is a senior at North Harford High School. She plays the flute in the school band, and is president of the school's Future Farmers of America club. She belongs to Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company and is working to become an EMT.

She is active at St. John's Lutheran Church where she volunteers in the nursery and Sunday school as well as working with Vacation Bible School.

Victoria Malstrom, of Phoenix, is a junior at Notre Dame Preparatory. She is in the National Math Honor Society and runs with the school's cross-country team. She is a Peer Minister at the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier, in Hunt Valley, and volunteers at Gallagher House, which serves people with developmental disabilities.

Kate Ramsdell, formerly of Phoenix, is a senior at St. Paul's School for Girls where she is yearbook editor, peer educator and a member of the Student Government Association. She is active in the Long Green Baptist Church and has participated in fundraisers for research in breast cancer, autism and cystic fibrosis.
