Bryn Mawr too much for Coppin Academy in basketball

The 13th Annual Paul Sherry Shootout was anything but a jinx for host Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon as the Mawrtians rolled to an easy 46-10 non-conference victory over Coppin Academy.

Proceeds from the game and donations from area businesses will go to the Hurricane Sandy Children in Emergency Fund.

The event honors the memory of former Towson Rec coach Paul Sherry, whose three daughters attended Bryn Mawr and played for their dad on various TRC teams.

The Shootout has now eclipsed the $100,000 fundraising, with $7,000 coming this year.

In the game, the Eagles, who boast only one senior and one junior, showed their lack of experience while being held scoreless in the second quarter. They trailed, 26-2, at halftime.

Meanwhile, Bryn Mawr followed up a recent 42-40 triumph over Severn by scoring the game's first 17 points against Coppin Academy and rolling from there.

The most pleasing aspect of the game for Bryn Mawr coach Mimi Walters was that most of the Mawrtians' baskets were assisted, including their first nine field goals.

"We've been working on moving the ball and not just settling for a shot after just one or two passes," Walters said.

The lopsided nature of the contest as it unfolded also had an influence on Bryn Mawr's patience in half-court sets.

Once the Mawrtians jumped out to a 17-0 advantage on fine shooting by seniors Maddie Crowell and Kate Snouffer and juniors Zoe Zawisa and Georgia Carroll, Walters said that she asked her team to slow down the pace.

"It was more like I wanted to make sure they all touched the ball (before attempting a shot)," she said. "But I didn't require it. They did a lot of that on their own."

That's when the Mawrtians' inside-out passing game worked around and through the Eagle defense for open shots and a 26-2 halftime advantage.

Baskets by Zawisa, Snouffer and Carroll ballooned the lead to 39-8 heading into the final period.
