Park edges Seton Keough in girls lacrosse

Park girls lacrosse coach Robin Lowe has been bothered by her team's slow starts this season. The Bruins went scoreless for more than 10 minutes in three of their first fives games.

But Lowe does love the strong finishes.

Park rallied from behind to overtake visiting Seton Keough Tuesday, 9-8, in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference game.

"We have struggled starting games, but our defense has really held us in a position where we can step up," Lowe said.

The hottest Bruins were junior attacker Sara Lessans (5 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore midfielder Natalie Rudin (3, 1).

Lessans scored the Bruins final four goals.

Senior midfielder Anna Stumme (4 goals) and freshman Emmi Webber (2) led Seton Keough. Senior goalie Becca Wallace made 11 saves for the Gators.

Seton Keough (2-2 overall, 1-2 league) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 11:06.  Stumme scored two goals to finish the stretch.

Lowe called a timeout after Seton Keough's fourth goal to calm down her Bruins.

It worked.

Park (4-1, 4-1) went on to score five of the next six goals to close the half and tie it at 5-5.

Rudin fueled the surge, recording three goals during that span.

Stumme helped wipe out the Bruins' momentum by finding the back of the cage twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half to put her team ahead, 7-5.

Park fought back to make it 7-7 with 13:47 remaining behind a pair of goals from Lessans.

After Webber gave Seton Keough an 8-7 lead about a minute later when she scored from behind the goal, the Bruins responded with two straight goals.

Lessans notched the game-winner with 8:24 left.

The Gators made the Bruins sweat down the stretch.

Seton Keough had five shots in the final 7:04, four of which were saved by sophomore goalie Lexi Kuntz (13 saves).

"We had a lot of great shots on the goalie," Seton Keough coach Amanda Malkowski said of the final minutes. "We just have to finish."
