A sexy zombie on The Avenue? There's a scary image for Halloween

Man! it's Halloween time again. I've had all year and I still can't come up with a costume. I think Halloween costumes should be scary, not tributes to your favorite movie, cartoon or TV characters (unless they're scary).

Admittedly, I have a hard time making any costume I wear not look sexy. But sexy (fill in the blank) costumes also seem, at best, antithetical to the holiday, and are, at worst bizarre. For example, two words that should never go together are "sexy" and "zombie."

Hampden's annual Halloween Fest is on Halloween this year, Thursday, Oct. 31. Trick-or-treating takes place from 5-6 p.m., with participating area merchants along 36th Street (The Avenue), Falls Road and Chestnut Avenue.

Then, the Halloween Costume Contest gets underway at 6:30 p.m., in front of Ma Petite Shoe in the 800 block of 36th.There will be trophies for all ages, for prettiest, scariest and most original costumes. This year, I'm urging the adults to show a little spirit and costume up, too. But please, as I mentioned above, no sexy zombies. Ugh.

After that, you can swing up to the Halloween show at the Golden West Cafe, 1105 W. 36th St., for some tunes to go with your costumes. Zombie E. Lee & The Sympathizers will be playing, with the Great American Canyon Band and Viking Moses. There will even be a Halloween photo booth. Doors open at 10 p.m.

Before Halloween, on Thursday, Oct. 24, at Atomic Books, 3620 Falls Road, the Atomic Fiction Series will host local author Heather Rounds, who will discuss, read from and sign copies of her new novel, "There." It's a work of biographical fiction set in the Kurdish region of Iraq. The event starts at 7 p.m. I will be co-hosting along with Kathy Flann.

If scotch is your thing, you may want to hit the Wine Source, 3601 Elm Ave., from 5-7p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, for a scotch tasting. You can check out samples of Highland Park, distilled in the Orkney Islands since 1798.

Okay, I still have a few days left before Halloween, so I'll be diligently working on a costume idea. Maybe a sexy werewolf — ugh, I mean, a regular werewolf.
