We are officially celebrating fall. Our weather has been lovely and neighbors are celebrating by taking leisurely strolls, jogging or walking their dogs. School has been in session for weeks now. Leaves have begun to fall and change color and West Laurel displays its autumnal beauty.
The West Laurel Civic Association will hold its fall 2012 general meeting on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the West Laurel Community Building on Brooklyn Bridge Road. U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards will be the esteemed guests.
Annual WLCA dues of $15 per household can be paid at the meeting. This is the best deal in town. Supporting the WLCA enables these hard-working volunteers to watch out for our community interests. All West Laurel residents are invited and are encouraged to attend this very informative meeting.
Prince George's County Environmental Services bulky trash pickups are always ready to come and pick up your bulk trash items such as appliances, tires, old furniture, etc. They usually come within one or two weeks, but you must schedule an appointment by calling 301-952-7600 or email BulkyTrash@co.pg.md.us. Appointments are scheduled for normal county workdays on a first-come, first-served basis.
Becca Owens Johnson and Rob Whittles both grew up in West Laurel and graduated from St. Vincent Pallotti High School. It's good to see a couple of friends like Becca and Rob bring a new business home. Becca teaches physical education skills to 4- and 5-year-olds, and started her business in Montana about four years ago. Now Rob will help expand the small business here in our area.
I've seen Rob work with young children and he is kind, understanding and a professional. He played football for the University of Maryland back in his college days. His father, John, is a physical therapist and his mother, Tricia, is a registered nurse, and they still have their home in West Laurel.
Classes for children ages 4 and 5 will begin on Oct. 3 and will meet at the Wellness for Life Center inside the Gardens Ice House on Old Gunpowder Road, weekly on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to help your kids enjoy a lifetime of physical activity by teaching sport skills, physical activity and nutrition.
