Chris Benowskyj posthumously named 2012 Laurel Volunteer of the Year

Chris Benowskyj, who lived in Laurel from 1978 until her death on died Feb. 24, 2013, was posthumously named the city's Volunteer of the Year for 2012.

Benowskyj completed 206 hours of volunteer service last year and completed training to be certified as a Search and Rescue Technician II. She began as a city volunteer in 2007, and volunteered with groups that included the Laurel CERT team, Laurel Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and Laurel Fourth of July Committee. She was also a volunteer Laurel Police Auxiliary officer.

In a release, city officials said Benowskyj's name was added to the Volunteer Laurel! plaque at City Hall.
