Everything's coming up (red) roses at Rainbow Florist

Among a rainbow of roses — dark pink, light pink, hot pink; yellow, orange and peach — red is the color of choice this week at Rainbow Florist and Delectables. The Main Street shop, which just celebrated its 28th year, was swimming in red roses as floral designers were busy creating hundreds of Valentine's Day orders.

Owner Debbie Zook estimates her store will use between 8,000 and 10,000 red roses to create Valentine arrangements and bouquets this year.

"Red roses mean love," Zook points out.

Extra help is on hand to prepare for the Valentine's season, and designers wear gloves to prevent their hands from being stained green from the rose stems. Zook calls it "a hard time for everybody in this industry."

The work continues beyond Valentine's Day, too.

"Friday (Feb. 15) will be busy for the ones that forgot," Zook said.
