Johnson’s resignation follows news Monday that she was no longer living in District 1, a violation of Maryland law. Johnson had told the Post Monday that she had no plans to resign, but said Tuesday she had sent notice to the board that she no longer lived in District 1, ending her term.
Johnson, 68, formerly of Laurel, moved out of District 1 in June to care for her dying mother in New Carrollton, according to the Post.
Johnson has served on the Prince George’s Board of Education since 2006, and had taught in county schools for 35 years. She had announced her retirement earlier this year, when she decided to not run for reelection.
Two contenders, Zabrina Epps, 40, of Laurel, and David Murray, 20, of Bowie, are vying for her open seat. Johnson previously beat out challenger Murray in the 2010 election, and has endorsed Epps for the general election.
