Man suspected of killing girlfriend, child in New York arrested in Laurel

A New York man suspected of killing his girlfriend and her son in Long Island was taken into custody Dec. 24 in Laurel.

Jerry A. Lewis, 24, entered the Laurel Police Department at 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 24 and told officers he was turning himself in, Laurel City spokesman James Collins said.

Lewis is accused of killing Shakeela Planter, 21, and Jaiden Planter, 2. Their bodies were discovered Dec. 23 in their apartment in North Bay Shore, according to the Associated Press.

Laurel police contacted Suffolk County police, who confirmed their investigation of the deaths. Detectives from Suffolk County arrived later, interviewed Lewis, then returned to New York to get a warrant charging Lewis in the homicides, Collins said.

Lewis was taken to the Prince George's County Detention Center on a charge of being a fugitive from justice, according to online court records. Lewis remained there as of Tuesday, awaiting extradition back to New York, Collins said.
