Maryland City: Support the volunteer firefighters through their annual drive

The beautiful weather continues to invigorate both the young and older alike. Neighbors attending to their yards and children riding bikes and skateboards and playing soccer and baseball fill the community with vibrancy and life. To help protect those lives and the ones you love, please consider donating to the Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department's annual drive. Our volunteers often find themselves as the first responders to any of our emergency needs. Show your appreciation for their dedication and sacrifice with a donation.

The Maryland City Volunteer Fire Department also hosts monthly basket bingos as an additional way to raise funds for our firehouse. The next bingo is this Saturday, April 14. The doors open at 5 p.m., so you can get a great seat and enjoy some food and the company of your friends before games begin at 7 p.m. Reserve a spot early and save $3 on the admission cost. Reservations can be made for $18 by emailing, by calling 301-483-4985, or on their Facebook page. Admission at the door will cost $21. Enjoy an evening out with friends; good luck to everyone!

The Maryland City Recreation Council provides a wide range of opportunities to our community children this spring. Spring basketball is under way with two travel teams. The travel soccer program is off to a strong start as well, fielding 14 teams this season. In fact, 14 seems to be the lucky number: On Saturday morning, April 14, the 14 in-house soccer teams begin competition with a friendly scrimmage starting the season and providing the players a chance to learn the philosophy and sportsmanship expected for the games.

The 10U travel baseball team plays its season-opening game on Saturday in the Anne Arundel County National League. Game time is 10 a.m. at Randazzo Park, field two. Good luck to all of the players as the season begins.

Finally, the T-ball and coach pitch teams have opening day on either Friday night, April 20 or Saturday afternoon, April 21.

Now that spring break is over, all sports teams for MCRC soccer and baseball ramp up their practices and games. All players should have been contacted by now regarding team practices. If you have not heard from a coach, please email to let my husband, John Venit, know.

Now that the weather has turned warmer, many may be eager about the coming of summer and thinking about a fun way to cool off. Memberships for the West Arundel Swim Club, located on Old Line Avenue, go on sale next week. WASC provides a family-fun atmosphere all summer long with activities that keep the kids busy all day. Enjoy relaxing under the pavilion or pergola with a book or dive right in using either the low or high dive. Participate in the water aerobics classes offered and take advantage of the wonderful swim lessons provided for both children and adults. Finally, enjoy a great sense of community by gathering for one of the many social functions during the season: family pot lucks, kids nights, teen nights, adult-only nights, movie night, the annual crab feast and the spectacular Fourth of July party. Contact the membership chair, Flo, at 301-725-5644 for more information on how to join.

Finally, MCRC will hold elections for the MCRC board on Monday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the media center at Brock Bridge Elementary School. Any individual interested in running for a position should contact the nominating committee chair, Kate Johnson, at
