Fred Smalls elected Laurel City Council president

The Laurel City Council unanimously voted to elect council member Fred Smalls as council president at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 26.

This is the third time Smalls, who has served 11 years on the council, has been elected president.

"There's nothing like having the confidence of your peers," Smalls said after Monday's meeting.

Smalls said one of the primary jobs of the president is to set the tone and pace of City Council meetings.

"I am excited to share my plans and vision with the mayor and council," Smalls said. "I will continue to work to move the city forward."

Both Mayor Craig Moe and Smalls thanked former council president Donna Crary, who served one year as president, for her service.

"I can't say enough about Donna's leadership and support for the administration," Moe said.
