Woman stands trial in auto death of teen on Route 1 in Jessup

The trial of a Prince George’s County woman facing a vehicular manslaughter charge in connection with a 2011 fatal accident on Route 1 in Jessup began in Howard County Circuit Court this week, according to State's attorney spokesman Wayne Kirwan.

Tristian Rayshon Johnson, 27, of the 3000 block of Ladova Way, in Springdale, also faces speeding, reckless driving and negligent driving charges in the April 2011 death of Cornell Gray Jr., 19, of Odenton, Kirwan said.

According to Howard County Police, Johnson's Chevrolet Camaro, which was traveling north bound on Route 1 near Mission Road, struck Gray's Nissan Maxima at approximately 11:25 p.m. on April 6 as the teen attempted to make a left-turn into the south bound lane.

At opening statments on Tuesday, Feb. 5, the prosecution said that Johnson was speeding and was unable to control her Camaro, Kirwan said.

Johnson's defense attorney said she was not speeding prior to impact, Kirwan said.

An initial police investigation determined that alcohol was not a factor in the collision, according to the original police news release.
