Joshua Barney House in Savage on the market

Ellicott City's Wayside Inn is not the only Howard County bed and breakfast for sale.

The Commodore Joshua Barney House, on Savage Guilford Road in Savage, has been on the market at six-month intervals for several years, said owner Susan Betts.

The seven-bedroom, Federal-style house, which was built around 1760 and is situated on 7 landscaped acres, is on the market for $1.5 million.

"This is a wonderful, gracious, historic home, and I've been privileged to be its caretaker," said Betts, who also works as a manufacturing sales representative. But at this point in her life, she said, she is "over having to work so hard."

Barney was a Baltimore native and a naval war hero in the War of 1812, who planned and executed the Battle of Bladensburg.

As Betts prepares for future retirement and none of her three children are interested in taking over the property, her search has intensified for a new owner to put the place to good use. The property, which is a gated community, is listed with Tudy Adler of ReMax.

Betts said the house, which was a private residence until she obtained its country inn zoning designation through the county in 2000, has the potential to be used in a variety of ways: as a home, retreat, restaurant or clubhouse, for instance. The property isn't being marketed solely as a B and B, nor is she selling her business, she said.

She has made significant improvements to the site, she said, adding an owner's wing and putting in extensive gardens where none existed before. The house has three kitchens, six fireplaces and 11 bathrooms.

"I made a good deal on it when I bought it, but I know for a fact that the price I'm asking is less than half what it would cost to replace," said Betts, aWashington, D.C., native who moved to the county when she acquired the property.

Sometime between 1740 and 1800, Barney purchased the home and lived there for a short time, Betts said. The property also served as a boarding school for about 10 years, beginning in the 1940s.
