Feeling a little bazaar lately? Lucky for you the Bazaar of the Churches will be on Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lisbon Fire Hall.
Participating churches include Lisbon United Methodist, Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran and St. Paul's Episcopal.
There will be homemade food items such as candy and cheese balls available for sale, as well as crafts and nearly new items. There will also be a silent auction and raffles. The Lisbon Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be selling lunch.
The Glenelg United Methodist Church's food pantry continues to help families in our neighborhood. Last month, they helped 29 families. The food pantry is open every third Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.
They are gearing up for the holiday season by providing turkeys and other Thanksgiving foods. Also, they desperately need laundry detergent for families.
The food pantry will take any food donations, especially those for Thanksgiving as well as monetary donations that will go to purchase turkeys. You can drop your donations off at the church on that third Saturday or contact email@example.com.
Howard County officials would like to warn residents about con artists offering help with storm clean-up. These door-to-door solicitors may be offering to remove fallen trees, repair storm damage or do home improvement work.
Most want to work without a contract or have some form of a vague contract. Of course, they prey on the most vulnerable, our senior citizens. Door-to-door solicitors should have a solicitor's ID card issued by the Office of Consumer Affairs. For large tree trimming and home improvement work, contractors should have a license.
You should not pay more than one-third of the contract price up front. If you are threatened or intimidated by these solicitors, you are encouraged to call the Police. For questions or information, call the Office of Consumer Affairs at 410-313-6420.
I sometimes take the back way into Columbia using Centennial Lane. The county has just started a construction project to extend public water and sewer service along Route 108 between Eliot's Oak Drive and Centennial Lane.
The project is due to be completed by March 2013 if the weather cooperates. There will be temporary lane shifts and closures between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
