New Cub Scout pack launched at St. James United Methodist [West Friendship]

Everything old is new again. Established in 1930 in the United States, the Cub Scouts is still going strong.

A new Cub Scout Pack, Pack 555, is being developed for interested boys in the elementary school grades at St. James United Methodist Church. The group aims to promote character development, citizenship training and personal fitness, and holds as its motto, "Do Your Best".

Camping, tying knots, archery, cooking over a campfire and more are the typical activities for Cub Scouts. Interested parents and potential Cub Scouts are invited to the kickoff open house meeting on Tuesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m., at St. James at 12470 Old Frederick Road, in Marriottsville. Questions can be directed to Scoutmaster Mike Bostron at 410-802-1286 or

Did someone say spring cleaning? Sandi Hawkins, of the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, knows just what you can do with all those boxes of miscellaneous items. The auxiliary is holding a mammoth yard sale/flea market event in the lower parking lot of Station 3 on April 27.

A "win-win" for sellers wishing to get rid of things and buyers looking for bargain treasures, the sale will be held 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27. If you would like to be a vendor, register at

Station 3 is at Routes 32 and 99, in West Friendship. While you are at the flea market, check out the brand new piece of apparatus, Tower 3, which will be in service soon. Members of West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department thank the community for the continued support.

April suffered no fools here in West Friendship. The first day of April was picture perfect with area gardeners already knee deep in spring yard spruce up endeavors. Bird lover Kate Tufts of the Robinson Nature Center was in seventh heaven with the lyrical bird chirps that could be heard from West Friendship to Lisbon — a spring symphony well worth the wait.

Leave it to community supporter Suzy Hill to launch a bake sale at her Curves location, just in time for the Easter buffet. Proceeds from the sale, which included what could only be described as "sinful desserts", went to the till of a local animal shelter.

"They're back."

The Kids Nearly New Sale is back one more time this spring. The ultimate children's sale is set for Saturday, April 13, 8 a.m to 1 p.m., at the Howard County Fairgrounds. The sale will feature about 140 vendors, with everything from bassinets to baseball bats, flower girl dresses to flying saucer toys. Kid style merchandise galore is the name of the game at the sale.
