Champion cheerleading coach has a proud grandmother [West Friendship]

If pride is one of the cardinal sins, then Donna Carr must be a real sinner. Donna is so proud of her grandchildren.

One of her flock is granddaughter Katie Carpenter, the cheerleading coach at River Hill High School. Katie is a 2008 graduate of Glenelg High.

Recently, Katie's cheerleaders were thrilled to be named county champs when the team won the Howard County Junior Varsity Cheerleading Championship. The squad also received second place in the District 5 competition.

Katie is proud of her team too. The 20 members of the cheering squad shout it out for the football and basketball teams at River Hill High.

If you've got renovation on your mind, come out to the Howard County fairgrounds in West Friendship on March 2, at 9 a.m., for a new building materials auction.

A preview of the items for auction will be March 1, noon to 6 p.m. Peak Auction Company has been holding this homebuilding event in West Friendship for close to two decades.

Members of Joel Goodman's Celestial Searchers Astronomy Club had plenty to discuss during the Feb. 25. meeting. Topics for the young astronomers included all the recent hoopla surrounding the near-miss asteroids and Russian meteorite falls.

"Stardoc" Goodman even brought along several 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite samples for the club members to examine. The club will meet next on March 18 at 7 p.m. in the art room at Bushy Park Elementary. Students in grades kindergarten through grade 12 are invited to join.

Spring musicals at area high schools are beginning to fill the calendar.

The Marriotts Ridge High production is "Crazy for You," set for March 21-24. Glenelg High School is producing Stephen Sondheim's beloved "Into the Woods" March 7-10 and Glenelg Country School will present "A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine" March 6-9. Can't wait.

The green of daffodil foliage is poking through the ground. Small bundles of crocus have been spotted in several West Friendship gardens. Spring is just around the corner.
