West Friendship: Spelling bee takes center stage at West Friendship Elementary

Did someone say spelling bee? My all time favorite activity at West Friendship Elementary is set for Jan. 25 at 2:45 p.m.

Last year, 5th grade student Hannah Al-Kowsi won the school bee by correctly spelling the word simulcast. Who knows what word wealth will be in place on Jan. 25?

"It's Italian Night," shouts Lynne Hall Quinn, who is the voice behind all the news of St. Andrew's events.

Families are invited to join fellow diners at St. Andrew's on Jan. 24, 6-8 p.m., for an Italian dinner prepared by the chef at Glenwood's popular Smokin' Hot Grille.

All proceeds from the dinner will benefit the youth group pilgrimage trip. Cost of the dinner is $9 for an individual or $30 for the entire family. St. Andrew's is at 2892 Route 97 between Union Chapel Road and the Post Office. Questions? Call Lynne Quinn at 410-292-8202.

The Glenelg High School PTA fundraiser for the After Prom event is set for Jan. 24 at the school. The Bingo Bag-a-Palooza features designer Coach handbags, Pandora bracelets, Vera Bradley items, spa packages and more.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. In addition to the bingo games, food and snacks will also be available for purchase. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Condolences to the family of Ann Hudson of West Friendship, who passed away on Jan. 5. Ann was a delightful, upbeat personality who adored attending yard sales in this area. She certainly always made her way to my sales back in the 1980's.

Ann was a school bus contractor in Howard County for more than three decades and a grand matriarch to her loving family — alovely lady who will be sorely missed.
