North Laurel/Savage: A tree lighting ceremony with lots of caroling

The holiday season has officially begun and what better way to start out the season then to attend the tree lighting ceremony in Savage.

It will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Baldwins Commons and Hall at 9035 Baltimore St. There will be carols and refreshments during the festivities.

The Hammond High School Chamber Choir will be in the hall for a special performance afterwards. Please bring canned food to help with the Savage Food Bank. Food banks have a higher demand during the holidays, so please be generous with your donation.

Mount Zion and Glenelg United Methodist Churches have joined their musical talent to perform Handel's "Messiah" on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 5 p.m. at Mount Zion Church at 12430 Scaggsville Road. Come out to enjoy a free musical evening of this special performance. They will be performing in Glenelg as well.

Trying to figure out how to afford to send your child or yourself to college? Hammond High School is sponsoring a Financial Aid Night on Wednesday, Dec.5, at 7 p.m., in the cafeteria.

Come out and find out how to apply for financial help, what programs are available through the state and what other types or assistance are available. Do not assume you cannot afford college. Find out about all the resources available. All seniors and parents are welcome.

Congratulations to Atholton High School's Girls' Golf team, which won first place in the county, and to Bryana Nguyen for becoming Maryland's State Champion in golf.

Congratulations to Reservoir High School's Boys Soccer team for winning the state championship.

Hammond High is proud that the 2012 Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches have announced that Hammond's Varsity Assistant Coach Steve Kavakos has been named Assistant Coach of the Year.

Coach Kavakos has been coaching for ten years at Hammond, which have included two Howard County Championships and one Regional. Hammond's groundskeeper Kenny Lokey was named Groundskeeper of the Year. The groundkeeping crew did a complete makeover on the fields by upgrading the sod, redoing the mound and redesigning the irrigation system.

Why not sign your child up for Deck the Halls, a winter workshop for kids 3 to 11. Come out and make some decorations, decorate a live tree at the center. Enjoy some refreshments and get into holiday spirit on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. Maybe you would like to learn to cook Christmas in Italy.
