North Laurel/Savage: Grassroots Day Resource honored for work with homeless

Congratulations to Grassroots Day Resource Center. It was named the 2012 Howard County Nonprofit Volunteer Organization of the Year.

The center is located along Route 1 in between Guilford Road and the exit for Route 32. It has been serving the chronically homeless in our community for four years and last year served 736 people.

It is open three days a week and offer showers, food, laundry services, fellowship and other services to those in need. It helped 95 homeless find employment, housing, family or enter a rehabilitation center over the years.

The Laurel Woods PTA supported Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services by collecting donations and food for them. They also educated the children on facts about homelessness and then ended the drive by holding a school wide walk during recess. Parents were encouraged to participate.

The United Methodist Church of Savage is holding its Fall Festival on Nov. 10, noon to 5 p.m. Enjoy their home-baked goods and yard sale. It is located at 9050 Baltimore St.

St. Francis of Assisi is holding its Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 9, 6 to 9 p.m., and Nov. 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a silent auction, vendors, basket raffles, fresh greens, homemade goodies and Santa Claus. The church is at 8300 Columbia Rd.

Resurrection of Our Lord Church will be holding its bazaar on Nov. 9, 5 to 8 p.m., and Nov. 10, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be handmade items, kid's room, raffle and a silent auction. The church is at 8402 Brock Bridge Road.

There will be a Teen Opportunities Fair at the North Laurel Community Center on Nov. 10, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will display opportunities for middle and high school teens and their families. The North Laurel Civic Association will hold its November meeting on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the North Laurel Community Center.

The association will vote on new by-laws, updating everyone on all the new developments that are being planned for the area, taking nominations for officers as well as planning for the 2013 year. This group helps fight to improve the community so please consider joining and getting involved. If you do not speak up for your area, who will? The association is also on Facebook.

The PTA Council of Howard County is giving away winter coats, hats and gloves around the county. The council will be at the North Laurel Community Center on Nov. 17, 9 a.m. to noon.
