North Laurel/Savage: Local schools ready for you — are you ready for them?

It is hard to believe, but it is time to start thinking about another school year.

The fall program for high school athletes will begin this Saturday, Aug. 11. And, Monday, Aug. 27, is the first day of school. That is just a few weeks away. Bus schedules will be in the paper the Thursday before school starts.

Did you move over the summer? Are you new to the area? If so, do not wait till the last minute to register your child. Classes are being formed so make sure your child is registered to attend.

Bollman Bridge will hold its orientation and open house on Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. for kindergarten, noon for the rec program, 2 p.m. for new students, and an open house for all will start at 2:30 p.m. The number is 410-880-5920.

Forest Ridge will hold a new student orientation 9 to 10 a.m. on Aug. 24 and the kindergarten orientation will be 10 to 11 a.m. There will also be an open house 2 to 3 p.m. that day for any students wishing to come up and see their classrooms. The number is 410-880-5950.

Laurel Woods will hold a kindergarten and new student orientation on Aug. 24. Details will follow. The number is 410-880-5960. Because of the construction at Gorman Crossing, details of orientation will come at a later time. The number is 410-880-5900.

Hammond Elementary is doing a few things differently this year.It will hold a Back to School Night for just parents on Aug. 23 starting at 6:30 p.m. and then will hold kindergarten Orientation on Aug. 24 at 10:30 a.m. Open house is later that day 2 to 3 p.m. The number is 410-880-5890.

The North Laurel Community Center will hold another Family Movie Night on Aug. 18. The movie will be "The Princess and the Frog." The cost is $2 for members, $4 for non-members and free for all kids up to 4 years old. It will start at 6 p.m. and the cost includes popcorn and a drink. You must register at 410-313-0390.

The last Howard County Police Community Athletic Program will be held at the North Laurel Community Center on Aug. 16. The hours for the program are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. What a great way for the kids on the community to see that police officers are our friends and protectors.

St. Francis of Assisi will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 8, 9 a.m. to noon. Spaces are available for rent at $20 for two spaces, $5 for any additional spaces. Mail checks to the church at 8300 Old Columbia Road, Fulton, MD 20759. Include your name, address and phone number.
