Some people mark the beginning of spring by the calendar, others by Mother Nature, but Woodstock residents look for three sure signs of season: the mulch sale at St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, the April Garage Sale at Frisky's and opening day at the Snowball Stand.
The St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Council Knights of Columbus will conduct their ninth annual mulch sale March 31. The cost is $5 for a 3-cubic-foot bag of brown mulch or a 2-cubic-foot bag of black mulch and proceeds will benefit the homeless shelter at Spring Grove Hospital, in Catonsville.
Delivery is free for all orders of 15 or more bags within a 10-mile radius of the church; other orders will be available for pickup at the church, 10800 Old Court Road, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For more than 40 years, Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary has held a garage sale to help defray the cost of caring for the animals that come through its doors. It is a nonprofit organization run solely by volunteers – 10 percent of any proceeds support the animals – so Frisky's will gratefully accept contributions year-round.
If you have secondhand items that you would like to drop off, leave them at the donation shed in Frisky's circular driveway (10790 Old Frederick Road) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Those needing assistance or a receipt should go to Frisky's front porch.
The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, April 1-29, so make sure to stop by and check out the selection.

As far as the Snowball Stand, opening information had not appeared by the time I submitted this column, but interested patrons can stay in the loop by liking the Snowball Stand's Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/thesnowballstand. In the past, the facility has opened around April 1.

Did you know that Success in Style has made some recent changes? This Ellicott City-based nonprofit provides business clothing and interview counseling to lesser advantaged men and women and partially funds its mission through a thrift store named Charity's Closet.
Although Charity's Closet still makes its home in Historic Savage Mill, it just moved to a larger space on the ground floor of the New Weave Building, at 8600 Foundry St., in Savage. The store is now open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Saturday, March 24, the Caregiver's Ministry at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church will host a Healthy Living Expo and American Red Cross Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 12430 Scaggsville Road, in Highland. The event will feature cooking demonstrations, health screenings, and a variety of beneficial health information.

Consider attending the sixth annual Money Matters Fair, scheduled for March 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the East Columbia Library, 6600 Cradlerock Way. The event aims to help county residents take charge of their finances and make smart financial decisions.
Attendees will get to visit with representatives from more than two dozen institutions and take advantage of several free services: credit reports, tax preparation and confidential document shredding. Glenelg High School would like to invite the community to its annual jazz concert, which takes place Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium (14025 Burntwoods Road, Glenelg). The Glenelg High School Marching Unit will be selling discounted prom dresses and formal gowns at a Paris Couture Collection Extravaganza Sunday, March 25 from 1 to 6 p.m. The event will take place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2892 Rt. 97, in Glenwood. Many independent beauty vendors (e.g., jewelry, natural skin care, purses) will also be on site.
St. Andrew's monthly community feast will take place tonight, Thursday, March 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. The meal costs $9 per person or $30 maximum per family, and kids 5 and younger eat for free. Proceeds will help send youth to a camp at the Bishop Claggett Center in Buckeystown.
Our local high school musicals also begin tonight. Marriotts Ridge High School will present "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying" Thursday-Saturday, March 22-24 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $10.
