Highland/Fulton: Reservoir Gators take a big bite out of Prince George's Invitational cross country meet

The Reservoir High School boys and girls cross country teams had great showings Sept. 24 at the Prince George's County Invitational.

Lisa Horowitz, Amy Oliver and Katie Wilson took the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 spots and Kelsey Ponton was 11th to lead the girls to the team championship. Junior varsity runner April Anlage won the JV division, as well.

On the boys side, the Gators placed second overall, edged out by Bowie High School. Brad Carrion led the pack and was followed by Owen Pochettino, Adam Gartrell, Ed Richardson and Teddy LaFemina, who finished in seventh through 11th places. Ricardo Rosario also placed 13th.

The JV boys had 13 of the top 16 places. Paul Grabow was the JV boys winner and was followed by Griffin Hyde in third and Cameron Cornish in fourth. The freshman boys had a great showing, having a "perfect finish" of the top seven places. Colin Cornish won the race, with Brian Fieni and Matthew Jackson only two seconds behind. Congratulations to all the runners for super efforts.

Speaking of high school, the 2011-2012 High School Essay Contest has started. This is the contest's sixth year and is hosted by the Bill of Rights Institute. This year's contest is sponsored by the History Channel. The topic for this year is "How does the Constitution establish and maintain a culture of liberty?"

The top three student winners from each of the five geographical regions will be awarded cash prizes of $1,000 (first place), $500 (second place), and $250 (third place). The LKMS students of the week for the week of Sept. 23 are: Cecelia Bartley, Max Reed, Anveer Saini, Cameron Andrews, Ryan Shen, Preslee Floyd, Caleb Melton and Sean Mercilliat.
