Highland/Fulton: Scholars and athletes shine at Lime Kiln Middle and Reservoir High

Over at Lime Kiln Middle School, I'm happy to report that the following students were named Students of the Week for the week ending Sept. 28: Lami Awoyemi, Jack McLaughlin, Shiv Patel, Alexandra Alston, Eli Adams, Maria Mastrogianis, Elise Park, Tim Horne, Addy Consoli and Alex Evans.

How many students would you reckon took the PSATs for the 2011-2012 school year? Would you believe more than 1.5 million students?

Of them, Reservoir High School students Caitlin Engman, Wilson Hong, Edward Lafemina, Emily Miller, Julio Peredo, Jake Weber, Lauren Bork, Fiona Ball, and Sylviane Alexion were selected as National Merit Commended Students in the 2012 -2013 National Merit Program, having been recognized for their exceptional academic potential by being among the top 5 percent of all of those aforementioned students.

"These students represent some of our best and brightest minds," said Principal Pat Saunderson.

On Sept. 15, the Reservoir Cross Country teams traveled to North Carolina and participated in the Adidas XC Challenge. This is one of the premier track meets and it attracts teams from all over the southeast.

Owen Pochettino, Adam Gartrell, Teddy LaFemina, Paul Grabow, Alex Hedgren, Collin Cornish, and Ricardo Rosario finished the day in second place, only 9 points behind the first place team. Likewise the Girls Varsity Team also took second place, finishing just 6 points behind the Chapel Hill Girls team. Congratulations to Karli Smiraglia, Cindy Alms, Katie Wilson, Amy Oliver, Heather Konstanzer, Kelsey Ponton, Tory LaFemina, and Lisa Horowitz.

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. But who wants to rake leaves and then take them to the dump? Ah, well that's where the Rake and Take Program sponsored by the University of Maryland Extension Howard County Master Gardeners" comes into play.

Here's how the program works: Send an email to phooker8440@gmail.com. In it, include your address and telephone number and let them know that you want to participate in the program. Then, when the leaves start to fall (like now), they'll give you a call to make arrangements for a pickup.
