Glenwood/Glenelg/Dayton: My word - these Triadelphia students can really spell

Students at Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School have been stung by a bee — the Spelling Bee, that is.

On Jan. 17, 36 fourth and fifth grade students participated in Triadelphia's annual Scripps Spelling Bee. After seven exciting rounds, fourth-grader Alexander Liu became the school Spelling Bee Champion spelling the word fabulist. Alex will go on to represent TRES at the Howard County Spelling Bee this spring.

Fourth-Grader Nikki Wildy was the runner up. Kudos to the participants for all of the hard work and wonderful spelling, including Pallavi Altrui, Jillian Bentivenga, Acacia Listou, Alisha Mahajan, Nimisha Seshadri, Dana Cohen, Daniel Reyes, Sydney Alexander, Christian Amaya, Saniya Vashist, Dylan O'Brien, Alexis Kim, Milan Shah, Nicholas Li, Paul McCann, Nikki Wildy, Nathan Goturi, Ian Montgomery, Grace Leonard, Kenneth Mo, Maisha Foyez, Katerina Zakel, Alexander Liu, Jimmy Reeves, Anami Patel, Walter Donoughe, Anjalie Gowda, Joshua Goldberg, Brian Vance, Dyson Muller, William Behler, Tommy Ruddo, Ilham Lakhani, Alena Shen, Andrew Choe and Lena Ahmed.

I recently had a call from Debbie Simpson, who wanted to extend a special thank you to the community for all of the support and prayers after the recent passing of her brother, "Teeny" Walter Simpson Jr.

Teeny was the son of Walter D. Simpson Sr. and Alice Simpson. He passed away on Jan. 9, at age 66, after a 4-year-long battle with cancer.

Teeny's siblings Gary, Clinton, Harry, Darlene, Sherry, Debbie and Peggy were overwhelmed to see how much Teeny was loved and cared about in the community. The family would also like to thank Uncle Dick and Aunt Eula Simpson for helping to hold the family together during this time of sorrow.

Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School is very proud of its band students, Alena Shen (clarinet) and Noah Choe (trumpet), who have been accepted into the Howard County Elementary School Gifted and Talented Band.

The GT Band consists of the top elementary musicians from the entire county. Students are nominated to audition by their band directors and must complete a rigorous and highly competitive audition process.

Noah and Alena will rehearse with the GT Band over the next several months in preparation for a concert in March.
