Tennis: Glenelg Country girls finish regular season 5-1

Glenelg Country School hosted Friends Tuesday afternoon under threatening skies in what amounted to the 'B' Conference title match. Both teams entered the match with 5-0 records, but Friends came out on top, 5-0, to finish the season 6-0 and win the 2011 girls tennis conference title.

At No. 2 Singles Allie Duncan played a close first set, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2 Doubles, Katie Modrow and Nikki Reisher matched their opponents shot-for-shot, but lost in two close sets by the score of 6-4, 6-4.

The other three positions were all able to at least take a set from their opponents. The No. 3 Doubles team of Hanah Tanenholtz and Katie Kunkle lost by the score of 6-4, 3-6, 1-6. At No. 1 Doubles, Erin Cole and Gabby Turner played evenly through three sets, only to lose 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Finally, No. 1 Single Maddy Taylor won her second set in a tiebreaker, and then because the match was already decided in Friends' favor, played a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set. Taylor fell in the tiebreaker, and lost the match by the score of 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), (10-2).

Despite the 5-0 loss, the Dragons finish the 2011 'B' Conference regular season with a 5-1 record, good for second place. This is the highest finish for the team since 2006. The team was very heartened to see the great student body support for the team, even as the match concluded in near darkness.

The Dragons will next take on the individual tournament at McDonogh, Oct. 17-19.
