Just du it

Howard County is forging a reputation as a mecca for multisport athletes, thanks to events such as the Columbia Triathlon, Iron Girl Triathlon and the Kidz Triathlon. But those who considered variety the spice of endurance racing had a limited menu to choose from until this year.

More than 400 duathletes completed the inaugural DUthe2 Duathlon Aug. 7 at Western Regional Park, in Woodbine. More than 550 competitors, with some coming from as far away as Florida and New York, registered for the race.

"We are the largest duathlon in the Mid-Atlantic region, so that is huge for a first-year event," said race director Daniel Serpico, who expects registration to balloon to around 700 next year.

Baltimore's Adam Driscoll, the cofounder of Adventures for the Cure, an organization that raises money for children with diabetes through cycling, was the overall winner in a time of 1 hour, 45 minutes and 59 seconds. Serpico's wife, Suzy, a professional triathlete, won the women's race in 1:57:19, edging out 31-year-old Hannah Hanson by 35 seconds.

Serpico said he was excited that 70 percent of the participants in this year's race were competing in a duathlon for the first time. The DUthe2 Duathlon included two disciplines — running and bicycling — in three stages: a two-mile run, a 26-mile bike ride and then a four-mile run. Serpico also added almost 50 percent were competing in a multisport event for the first time.
