For some, end of school signals end of career

Summer is well underway in Howard County, and most of the school system's 51,419 students are enjoying life away from the classroom.

In the two weeks proceeding June 8, the last day of school, 3,929 students graduated from the school system. But they weren't the only ones saying goodbye.

As of last week, 133 school system staff had announced their retirement, according to spokeswoman Patti Caplan.

Included on these pages are stories about five retirees — Pamela Blackwell, director of student services; Caplan, public information officer; Donna Heller, director of health services and Ann and Dan Burdette, an ESOL teacher and pupil personnel worker, respectively.
