Letter: To slow speeders, use cameras, not speed bumps

It is with dismay that I read that Howard County is going to resume speed bump construction. My concern is that these bumps slow the response of emergency vehicles, the constant thump/thump of vehicles day and night is maddening to residents living in their vicinity, and that they disintegrate with time requiring addition county maintenance, which may be delayed because of budget constraints.

A better solution is expansion of the speed camera system (would require change to existing law) that also generates revenue for the county.

Editor's note: The county is planning on resuming speed hump construction, speed humps being lower, more graded devices than speed bumps.
