Wrestling: Kadge wins heavyweight title at Snowverlea Invitational

Oakland Mills fell short in an attempt to win its fourth conecutive Snowverlea Invitational tournament at Overlea High School on Jan. 28, placing fourth with 136 points behind Boys Latin (137), Fallston (185) and team-champion Perry Hall (186.5).

Three-time state champion Tony Farace (120) attended the tournament in street clothes, rooting on his teammates matside after injuring his shoulder during a loss to fellow three-time state champ Nathan Kraisser of Centennial on Jan. 24.

Farace said that the injury was a slight tear, but he should be back on the mat for a dual meet with Atholton on Jan. 31.

Oakland Mills senior heavyweight Roy Kadge brought home the Scorpions' only championship, defeating Fallston's Jesse Harmon, 2-1, in the finals.

In the most anticipated match-up of the tournament finals, Oakland Mills junior Zach Hensley met Perry Hall sophomore Zeke Salvo in a showdown between the top two 106-pounders in the state as ranked by the Maryland State Wrestling Association. Hensley, a county champion and third-place state finisher last year, strick first with a takedown, but Salvo tied the match before the end of the first period with a reversal. Neither wrestler scored in the second, but Salvo, who also placed third in the state last year, won the match in the third period with a reversal and two nearfall points.

David Ulysse (152) placed third for the Scorpions, with his only loss coming in overtime in the semfinals to the eventual champion, Boys Latin's Rocco Bruno. Michael Moore (138) and Jaron Smith (145) each won four matches to take fifth place.

Atholton also represented Howard County in the tournament, placing 11th out of 23 teams with 87 points. The Raiders had a pair of third place finishers in Pat Mullens (145) and Matt Fields (182). Mullens' only loss was a 7-6 decision in the semifinals. Emilio Altamirano (160) placed fourth for the Raiders.
