Wilde Lake field hockey defeats Oakland Mills, 2-1

Most coaches would agree that a team’s success could be measured in many ways. One such way would be whether the team improved and became a cohesive unit throughout the season. Wilde Lake can say that it has accomplished that goal, and its latest victory over Oakland Mills, 2-1 on Friday afternoon, is just the fruit of its labor.

The first half proved to be the deciding factor.

The Wildecats controlled the first five minutes of the game, with Brittney Kuntz putting her team on the board following some traffic in the circle.

Oakland Mills pressured right back and a little over three minutes later Christina Devine evened the score, tallying a goal on a corner play.

Then came Eileen Mee who scored the game winner with a little more than 13 minutes left in the first half. She attributed team unity for the win.

“I think we worked together at times. We really brought it out,” Mee said  “We were excited all day at school and we came on the field and executed. It’s an awesome thing to do as a team.”

The second half brought scoring opportunities for each team, however, neither was able to capitalize.

Scorpions coach Nikki Trunzo was disappointed with the lack of consistency her team has had.

“We had effort, but we didn’t put things together well,” Trunzo explained. “But I think Wilde Lake moved to the ball nicely and moved well down the field.”

With one game still remaining in the regular season, Wilde Lake has increased its goals scored from the 2011 season and decreased goals against by 20 percent.

Coach Lindsay Startt is pleased with her teams cohesiveness.

“They were working well together at the beginning of the season but then we had some challenges. But they’ve really come together and that’s what helped us to be successful today,” she said. “They weren’t playing as individuals, they were playing as a team.”
