Glenelg girls basketball pulls away in fourth quarter

After watching a nine-point second half lead disappear early in the fourth quarter, Glenelg desperately needed a spark to reclaim control of the game.

Megan Taylor promptly made a play that shifted the momentum back into the Gladiators’ favor.

The sophomore guard jumped a pass at half court and turned it into an and-one layup. She followed that up with a 3-pointer and Glenelg ran away from Southern for a 45-28 win at the Lady Spartans Holiday Classic in Laurel.

“We needed to pick up the aggression at that point,” Taylor said. “We were in a (press) and I saw the pass coming. I went for it and luckily got some of it. I had hoped I would make the layup and I did.”

Taylor and 6-foot-3 center Kristin Yuan each scored 12 points to lead Glenelg (4-3 overall), while junior guard Olivia Nowlin added 10 points and seven assists.

Bulldogs’ 6-foot center Jordyn Brown scored an and-one and made the free throw to tie the score at 24 with 5:53 left in regulation. Brown scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half but after scoring the game-tying bucket, she never put up another shot.

Taylor’s and-one and subsequent 3-pointer started a 10-0 run for the Gladiators who took a 34-24 advantage. Yuan added two buckets inside to cap the run.

“I thought that we really played well in the second half,” Yuan said. “We really picked up our energy and we’ll all just trying to motivate each other to do well.”

Glenelg’s defense was the catalyst for the fourth quarter success. The Gladiators forced 36 turnovers in the game – including 11 over the final eight minutes – and held Southern scoreless for the last 2 minutes, 55 seconds.

“We changed our defense a little bit trying to pick up the momentum a little bit. We got a couple steals and finally finished them,” Glenelg coach Don Beall said. “One basket just breeds another basket and another, and the momentum definitely switched.”

Glenelg returns to the court at Laurel High School on Thursday to face Meade at 6 p.m.
