Reservoir trailed Northwest of Montgomery County heading into the consolation finals of the Grapple at the Brook tournament at Springbrook High School on Saturday, but the Gators got some well-timed wins from Trent Kilcarr (120) and Hans Wicklein (138) in the consolation finals to take the lead.
Then, in the championship finals, Reservoir extended its lead with wins by Troy Kilcarr (113), Mason Kilcarr (132) and Wes Beattie (170).
The Gators finished with 205 points, nine ahead of runner-up Northwest (196).
Michael Sullivan (195) placed second for Reservoir.
Troy Kilcarr's finals win was especially important, as it came in overtime, 8-6, against Northwest's Nick Davis. Mason Kilcarr also had a close win, defeating Sherwood's Chris Minor, 8-4. Beattie scored a 17-1 tech fall over Poolesville's Che Cabellero.
Reservoir also won the Grapple at the Brook in 2009 and 2010.
Howard (9th, 104.5) and Long Reach (14th, 47) also represented Howard County in the tournament.
Park wins Battle at the Base
Marriotts Ridge's Chris Park, a 2012 regional champion, pinned C. Milton Wright's Noah Bowers 3:40 into the 195-pound championship match at the Battle at the Base tournament at Meade High School. Park pinned his semifinals opponent in only 22 seconds.
The Mustangs finished ninth out of 16 teams, with 349 points.
Chaconas leads Dragons at Battle by the Bay
A short-handed Glenelg Country squad placed 14th out of 14 teams at the Battle by the Bay tournament at St. Michaels High School last weekend, but Reid Chaconas (132) won six matches to place a strong third. Chaconas scored three first-period pins on the second day of the tournament, when his only loss came by a 6-2 decision to Snow Hill's Chris Gonzales.
Eric Wooton (138) finished 4-3 for the Dragons, with three second-day pins for a fifth place finish. Emanuel Curtis (195) recovered from two first-day tech falls to finish the tournament 3-3 with two pins for a sixth place finish.
