Howard Community College teams win Region XX titles despite snowstorm

The Howard Community College cross country men's and women's teams captured titles at the Region XX/Maryland JUCO Championships Oct. 29 in a driving snowstorm.

Mary Rzegocki led the women with a second-place finish in a time of 22 minutes, 8 seconds. She was followed by Leslie Dickens (sixth, 24:14), Madison Hoover (10th, 26:32), Destiny Jones (14th, 28:34) and Reenae Winfree (18th, 29:22).

This was the third regional title for the women's team and its first state JUCO title. Rzegocki and Dickens were both named to the all-region and All-JUCO teams.

Filagot Dinku led the men's team, finishing fourth with a time of 29:24 for the 8k race. He was followed by Andrew Parlette (eighth, 29:56), Rafi Fernandez (12th, 31:02), Ken Clarkson (15th, 31:43), Brandon Woodley (20th, 34:09), Edwin Walker (21st, 34:10), Kyle Gorinson (36th, 40:03) and Anthony Petropoulakis (40th, 43:42).

The men won the Division III region title and were second in the state JUCO. Dinku, Parlette and Fernandez made the all-region team, while Dinku was named to the All-JUCO team as well.

"It was certainly interesting," coach Steve Musselman said. "The three inches of snow and the wind made for some rough conditions. They ran a very tough race and accomplished our team goals."

The team will travel to Springfield, Mass., Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 3-5 to compete in the NJCAA Division III national meet.

Coach Musselman was named Region XX/D-III Coach of the Year for men and women and Maryland JUCO women's coach of the year.
