Harrison's overtime goal sends Glenelg ice hockey to County Cup game

As their Howard conference semifinal game against Marriotts Ridge at the Gardens Ice House Thursday night headed into overtime, Glenelg's Charlie Harrison thought back to two games earlier in the season.

First, there was the embarassing 10-3 exhibition loss to Marriotts Ridge in mid-November to start the season. Then there was the 5-4 loss to defending state champion Atholton on a goal in the final seconds, after Glenelg held a 4-2 third-period lead.

But all of those bad memories were erased when, three minutes into overtime, Harrison flashed across the mouth of the Marriotts Ridge goal and flicked in the game-winner.

"I just took a chance," said Harrison, who led Howard County with 34 goals this season. "I was taking chances all day and then with like two minutes left: best goal I've ever scored."

The win avenged Glenelg's earlier loss to Marriotts Ridge (the Gladiators also beat the Mustangs in mid-January), and now they'll get a chance to avenge the Atholton loss when they face the Raiders for the Howard County Cup game Friday night at 10:30 at the Columbia Ice Rink.

Harrison, who was penalized for misconduct in the last two minutes against Atholton, is especially eager to get back out on the ice against the Raiders.

"Against Atholton I was in the box, we were on the penalty kill with two minutes left" when they scored, he said. "It wasn't how it should have been ... It's gonna take defensive play, limiting their shots... we've got to help our goalie out."

But the rematch almost wasn't to be.

Marriotts Ridge raced out to a 3-0 first-period lead against Glenelg's first-year goalie, Chris Dillon, as Eric Winik (power play), Guy Scarpaci (power play) and Matt Emery all scored goals. But Glenelg's prolific Johnny Lyons found the net twice in the final five minutes of the period, and then both goalies settled in.

Glenelg's Jake Valenze tied the game early in the second period, and then neither team scored again until Harrison's overtime goal.

"We were down 3-0. To come back in overtime, this was great," Harrison said. "This team has improved so far since losing to these guys 10-3 ... it's just been awesome to watch and awesome to play on this team."
