Centennial boys golf pulls away from Mt. Hebron, 91-77

Centennial got itself a little redemption Tuesday. Up against a Mt. Hebron team that had effectively spoiled their hopes of a county championship last fall with a late-season upset, the Eagles came out and handled their business this time around with a 91-77 victory.

"Last year we had a little bit of a hiccup against these guys … they're really good players and we knew we had to play our best (today)," said senior Connor Flach, who led the Eagles charge Tuesday with an even par round of 27 points.

"Bottom line is we had a chance to win the county championship last year and these guys kind of prevented that from happening. We wanted to make sure we took care of business today."

Although the final score was somewhat lopsided, Mt. Hebron did make the Eagles work for their second straight win to open the season. Behind the play of Gene Yoo (24 points) and Patrick Hardy (20), the Vikings were actually within two strokes through the first six holes.

Down the stretch, though, Centennial found another gear. Flach made two birdies to finish his round, Sahil Mehta (24 points) birdied No. 7, and Matt McShane (22) and Mike Humphrey (18) each scattered a couple of key pars over the final few holes.

For Mehta, the 24 points set a new career high. The 22 points he shot in the team's opening day win over Hammond had been his previous best.

My. Hebron's Yoo also set a career mark with his three-over-par day, exceeding his previous best match score by four shots. He finished with two birdies, including one courtesy of a lengthy putt on the par 3 ninth hole.

Behind Yoo and Hardy, the Vikings rounded out their scoring with 19 points from David Marino and 14 from James Shearman. As a team, Mt. Hebron has now eclipsed the 75-point mark twice to open the year.

"I'm very pleased," Mt. Hebron coach Don Walters said. "Sure, we could have been a few strokes better here or there and hit 80, but for this early in the season we're doing a lot of good things."
