Glenelg Country girls basketball wins opening round playoff game

Glenelg Country ended Key School’s season on Friday after defeating the visiting Obezags, 46-43, in the opening round of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference playoffs.

Sophomore Sabrina DeLeonibus scored a team-high 21 points and senior Hannah Harbold added 10 for the Dragons (7-10).

“We had two great back-to-back wins this week. Beating Baltimore Lutheran on Thursday earned us the right to host this playoff game, and the support from the crowd definitely helped down the stretch,” Glenelg Country coach Ed Conroy said.

Glenelg Country was able to hold off Key in a back-and-forth game where neither team led by more than six points. The Dragons attempted to nullify the Obezags’ height advantage by playing a tight and swarming 2-3 defense.

The turning point of the game came late on a series of steals which led to two layups to tie the game, and a 3-pointer from Harbold with under two minutes gave the Dragons a lead they wouldn't lose.

Glenelg Country advances to the quarterfinals round against top-seeded Catholic on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

The Dragons came charging out of the gate thanks to sophomore guard Kendra Isaacs, who hit three 3-pointers and had a breakaway layup to account for all 11 of Glenelg’s first quarter points.

“Kendra’s 11 first-quarter points really set the tone for today’s contest, and the rest of the team fed off of her great energy and kept getting great looks on offense and hustling on defense,” Conroy said. “This is exactly the type of basketball we need to keep playing if we want to make a deep run into the playoffs.”
