Oakland Mills picks up season-opening girls basketball win

Traonna Thomas made the most of her return to the basketball court. After missing last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the senior scored 10 points, grabbed 10 boards and had seven steals in Oakland Mill’s 45-25 season opening victory over visiting Edgewood Wednesday.

Karigan Awkward also had a double-double for the Scorpions (1-0), finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Tori Diggs had a team-high 11 points in the win.

Oakland Mills ended the game strong, but started the contest a little slowly.

“We got off to a sloppy start,” coach Seth Willingham said. “We were missing layups and fumbling the ball. Must have been first game jitters but we got it together in the second half.”
