Lightning Flash 5k
A beautiful, almost perfect fall morning greeted those who participated in the Lightning Flash 5k, hosted by the Long Reach field hockey program last Saturday.
The day started on a fun note with a mommy trot. Ten toddlers and young children sprinted around the track with their parents all laughing the entire way.
A field of 55 runners and walkers participated in the 5k and the Lightning was able to raise $900 for Grassroots of Howard County.
What is a 5k without a winner? On the women's side, first place went to Kerrie Hamilton followed by Amy Davis (second) and Lianne McGillen (third). In the men's field, Charlie Moran took first. Bowie Smith and Kapil Bhanot finished second and third, respectively.
Overall the event was a success. The coaches and players were pleased with the turnout and were able to raise more money than expected.
Long Reach coach Rashmi Bhanot said, "As a program we try to instill the concept that there is so much more in life than just playing sports and that we need to use whatever platform we have to give back to the community."
Grassroots is Howard County's only homeless shelter and crisis intervention center. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days per week and helps anyone in need, free of charge.
Last year, Grassroots received over 30,000 calls to the hotline from people in crisis. Over 1,600 people met face-to-face with crisis counselors.
When Howard County schools ended in June of this year, there were almost 600 homeless children attending 61 schools in our community. Grassroots depends on community support to help those who need it most. Grassroots is a not-for-profit organization located on Freetown Road in Columbia.
