Vorel lifts Centennial boys soccer past Oakland Mills

Peter Vorel scored two goals, the second coming with 5:21 left in regulation, to lift Centennial to a, 2-1, comeback victory over Oakland Mills Friday.

The Eagles improved to 9-0 in county play, 11-0 overall, and responded exactly how their coach Jim Zehe would have hoped to the team’s first deficit of the season early in the first half.

“It’s true that we hadn’t been behind, but we handled it pretty much exactly how I hoped and expected we would,” Zehe said. “The force of will that Peter brought to the game was huge and also the experience of being behind, maybe not this year, but in previous seasons for these guys … that made a big difference.”

Oakland Mills (6-3, 9-3), meanwhile, saw its six-game winning streak snapped.

But even in defeat, the Scorpions showcased why this has been a turnaround campaign this fall for the program.

Oakland Mills kicked off the scoring 10 minutes in when John Caldwell headed home a long throw from the left sideline by Ben Kale. It was just the fourth time all season the Eagles had been scored upon.

“We’ve been really practicing those free kicks, corner kicks and long throws and we’ve got a pretty good system going now,” said Oakland Mills coach Trevor Shea, who was filling in Friday in the absence of Don Shea. “On that play, Caldwell got himself there and made something happen.”

Before halftime, though, Centennial got the equalizer. Danny Mooney slotted a ball up the middle to a streaking Peter Vorel, who finished into the left corner to square the game at 1-1.

“I’m not happy they scored on us, but it’s probably what we needed,” Vorel said. “It was a wake-up call.”

The game stayed knotted up all the way until the closing minutes when Vorel again got himself behind the Oakland Mills defense. This time, he corralled the ball near the top of the box and fired a hard shot off the hands of Oakland Mills goalie Hassan Mostafa (5 saves) into the right corner.

“We’ve been scoring goals this year, but in this game against a team like them, you have to take advantage of every chance you get,” Vorel said. “I was unmarked there and was able to dribble through, take a touch and finish it.”

Oakland Mills was unable to find the equalizer in the closing minutes, resulting in the one-goal decision. Centennial goalie Jackson Bicknell finished with 6 saves in the victory.
