Dyer enters re-election bid for school board as field grows to five

School board member Allen Dyer filed for re-election Friday, becoming the fifth candidate to run for the 2012 Howard County Board of Education.

With his filing, Dyer joins incumbents Janet Siddiqui and Ellen Giles, and challengers Leslie Kornreich and Ann De Lacy. The deadline to file is 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Dyer, who could not be reached for comment, has served on the board since 2008. He has been involved in several lawsuits against the board, both before and during his term, and is often at odds with members of the board majority.

In June 2011, his fellow board members voted to request the Maryland State Board of Education remove him from his seat. Hearings in that case are scheduled to begin in May.

A primary election could be held in April, but only if there are seven or more candidates for the three positions. If no primary is held, the candidates automatically progress to the general election.
